However, it’s important for pet owners to understand the limitations of sedation-free dental care. 
Because the dog is awake, only the visible surfaces of the teeth can be cleaned — subgingival areas (beneath the gumline), 
where the most serious dental disease begins, cannot be thoroughly treated without anesthesia. While sedation-free 
cleanings can be a useful part of a preventive dental routine, they should not replace comprehensive veterinary 
exams and cleanings when needed.
